Motivation from behind is a coin termed by Clemens Lugowski and states that an event or narrative element only gains its justification when viewed in the light of the outcome that follows it = final motivation. (For example, a character falls down the stairs and dies because they stand in the way of the story's progression (final motivation), and not because the staircase is dark and the steps are worn down due to stinginess (causal motivation).
