The following comic, “Storytime”, is an Open Educational Resource designed to introduce those interested to the field of historical narratology. Inspired by the Codex Manesse it was hand-drawn with pencil on paper and coloured with acrylic and watercolour paint, ink, coloured pencil, and markers. The parchment background and text were added in digitally. Please use it for self-study or school and university lessons!

I’d be happy to receive your feedback and suggestions and I’d be particularly happy if “Storytime” proved useful for teaching and learning.

I am Eva-Lotte Gebhardt and at the moment a doctoral researcher at the University of Vienna in the field of medieval and early modern German literature as part of the MSCA-funded project Remediating the Early Book: Pasts and Futures (REBPAF). My dissertation focuses on early modern collections of short texts as well as 17th-century newspapers with the aim to shed light on narratological means employed and their relation to the technology of print.

Through my teaching at the University of Vienna, I came up with the idea to create a comic with a medieval aesthetic that conveys historical narratology. On the one hand this visual and narrating approach is supposed to facilitate understanding and increase memorability of narratological concepts. On the other hand, I was interested in exploring how useful the aesthetic of medieval book illustration would prove to create a comic. After all, comic as a medium needs simplification if it intends to span many pages, but also schematics, as this enables recognition as well as conveying concepts through an established visual language.
